MARCH 2011: Vietnam

01/03
The bus was a bit cramped on the way to Dalat,
It parked up- we found a room as easy as that!
Great spring rolls, and a free countryside ride,
But no haggling the price to Hanoi- we tried!
02/03
We walked round Dalat, found Windy as a guide,
Him and Denis took us for a test motorbike ride!
Afternoon was chilled, the weather not so fine,
Then we almost couldn’t pay for some Dalat wine!
03/03
Phuong and Chan took us to further sights in Dalat,
Coffee plantations and more- Pat didn’t like that,
But cheered up when it became more about the ride,
Now chilling in the homestay- it’s windy outside!
04/03
Pat’s back hurt after brick factory work- too tall,
Some ‘pho bo’, then swimming in a waterfall!
Birds copying calls, python thick as a log,
Dinner at a local place with ostrich, deer and frog!
05/03
Had sizzling beef and a baguette in the morn,
Learnt how to make instant noodles, and grow a peppercorn,
From a rubber tree, we watched white sap fall,
Veal BBQ, then played and watched football!
06/03
Pat rode a memorial tank, the weather was fine,
Minority village gave us some rice wine,
We drove through lush jungles under the sinking sun,
Hotpot, then after dinner karaoke was fun!
07/03
We saw a bamboo pipe and learned to make rice wine,
With Hina, Danny, Thinh, Tham- the end of the line,
It was foggy up the mountains, but the boys got through,
Salt-pepper-tapioca-lime- great with lamb BBQ!
08/03
Dennis told 5 different trails at Hamburger Hill,
On the motorbike today, I felt quite a chill,
When in minority villages, they gathered in a group,
Khe Sanh War Museum, then for dinner rice soup!
09/03
At the cemetery, incense burned; there was no sound,
Then Vinh Moc- tunnels where people lived underground,
Random family gave us rice wine, and each a portrait,
Though full, squid noodles at dinner were still great.
10/03
From the ocean back to the mountains again,
Beautiful valley views despite fog and rain,
We saw a cave that stored weapons down the Ho Chi Minh trail,
Lots of riding- we finished lunch and dinner without fail!
11/03
To see one cool cave, we climbed quite a height,
Then boating through a cave filled with rainbow light,
Playing with a cute baby in a wool hat was fun,
At dinner, a shouting man said he owned everyone!
12/03
Bo ne, then Dong Luc Junction, where young people died,
Then a whole village surrounded us from every side,
Ho Chi Minh's homeland, a cow on a bike,
Then a goat burned black- a sight we didn't like!
13/03
For the first time in a while, it was sunny outside
Which made for a more pleasant ride,
At a holy fish stream, I played a wooden recorder,
Salty green mango was our last local food order!
14/03
Some pho for breakfast, then time to 'de toi'
All the way to our final stop, Hanoi.
Pressies for Pat, we met Hina and Danny once more,
Karaoke was fun, but pricier than before!
15/03
Lazy days watching movies because of the rain,
Getting to the market and buying jeans was a pain,
But it wasn't long before we were up in the sky,
Bidding Vietnam- and our travels- a fond goodbye.
